Relearning Skills, Regaining Independence
At Christian Care Communities’ Stepping Stones, we believe that individuals with acquired brain injuries (ABI) can be given back a measure of control over their lives and achieve their fullest potential.
Through our comprehensive, therapeutic Stepping Stones program, our highly experienced professionals work with individuals with acquired brain injuries to help them regain lost living skills and move toward independence in their lives and communities.
Recognizing that relearning skills is best accomplished through real-life experience, Stepping Stones is a community-based treatment program for individuals who have sustained acquired brain injuries. We provide services to individuals who live in their own homes or, temporarily, live in one of our five staffed residences. Every aspect of our program, which is designed for individuals 18 years or older, is therapeutic. Our goals are to:
- Transition individuals with ABI from 24-hour supervised living to supported and independent living; and
- Help individuals who have little or no productive role in the community to return to paid employment, school or other productive activities.

Treatment for Wide Range of ABI Complications
Our treatment program is designed for individuals with a wide range of complications related to ABI, including:
- Impaired activities of daily living. We work with individuals who require 24 hour care/supervision to transition them to greater independence in the areas of grooming, bathing, dressing, productive roles, home management, leisure time management, medication management and financial management.
- Cognitive impairments that interfere with daily living tasks in and outside of a home environment. These include, but are not limited to, impairments of memory, alertness, attention, arousal, initiation, problem solving and organizational skills.
- Behavioral impairments such as anxiety, depression, fear, social withdrawal, mood swings, impulsiveness, decreased motivation, poor insight and judgement that interfere with independent living and vocational pursuits.
Stepping Stones offers comprehensive clinical services, including:
- Case management and health-care coordination to ensure maximum support for each client and to monitor medical needs.
- Occupational therapy for improving daily living and work task skills. Services provided by our occupational therapy team include instruction in activities of daily living and community integration skills; home and workplace assessments/modifications; instruction in adaptive equipment; sensory-motor skill development; neuromuscular re-education; and training in orthotic devices.
- Speech/Language therapy to assist clients with written and oral communications and cognitive functioning skills. Our speech-language pathologists also evaluate each client’s ability to safely swallow food and liquids and provide treatment and adaptive strategies as needed.
- Behavioral support services for influencing or changing behavior to achieve positive outcomes.
- Counseling services for clients and families to address such issues as personal changes related to the injury, interpersonal and problem solving skills, anger management and addictions.
- Residential support services, such as medication administration; transportation to and participation in medical appointments; and follow-up care and assistance with activities of daily living, including laundry, shopping, cooking and home exercise programs.
- Respite services that offer a safe and inviting location for clients while caregivers take a much-needed break.
